THE NEWSLETTER TEAM IS BORN!
As I'm sure many of you know, I am stepping down as the editor. I've had a
great time and I am very grateful to Michael and Greg for giving me a chance
to try my own ideas for the newsletter, including starting up the gutenbergnews.org
website. If you're wondering, yes, gutenbergnews.org will stay live and up-to-date.
I will continue on as webmaster.
As my last entry I would like to introduce the new Newsletter Team!
With such a great response to our request for a replacement editor, it was a
natural choice to create a team of editors. The new editors, from both sides
of the pond, are Stacey, Jared and Andra.
You can bet they will be digging up some interesting and diverse news relating
to PG, eBooks and publishing in general. Very likely a few surprises too!
Kindest Regards,
Michael Cook

NOTES:
To arrive at the Newsletter statistics a manual count was done on all the
'posted' listings found in the Newsletter Archives. For PG-EU the website
listing was used. All these statistics were then entered into a spreadsheet.
DP-EU is currently concentrating on U.S. copyright clearable eBooks and
therefore many of these are posted to both the PG and PG-EU sites, non U.S.
clearable books posted to PG-EU only. Please note that only the non-clearable
('Unique') eBooks are counted toward the Totals and not the overall PG-EU total.
DP-CA - Like the European project this has many books posted to both the PG and
PG-CA sites, non U.S. clearable books posted to PG-CA only. Please note that
only the non-clearable ('Unique') eBooks are counted toward the Totals and
not the overall PG-CA total.

================================================================================
Jack Schofield wrote this nice little article for the Guardian website yesterday. He talks about the project archives, volunteering and includes a nice little quote from the site about preservation.
Here is the article in full;
If you fancy a good read, Project Gutenberg has more than 22,000 books available to download, and they are all free. You can’t grab the latest blockbusters, of course. Instead the database provides access to out-of-copyright texts, which generally means pre-1923, for the US site. You can download works by Jane Austen, Charlotte Bronte, Mark Twain, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Joseph Conrad, HG Wells, William Shakespeare and many others, going back through Beowulf to Plato.
The German-language e-book producing community and the German Team at Distributed Proofreaders proudly present the 500th German e-book at Project Gutenberg! We hope you enjoy it, as well as all the other German books we’ve posted so far, and you will be looking forward to the next 500 books as much as we do!

Wir hoffen, ihr habt Spaß an diesem und all den anderen deutschen Büchern, die wir schon gepostet haben, und freut euch mit uns gemeinsam auf die nächsten 500 Bücher!)

FEATURED NEWS
-------------
NEWSLETTER EDITORS REQUIRED
I'm sure many of you read the post from Michael Hart that I am having to step
down from the editor position. Since moving to Germany my new job and life has
made it difficult to keep on top of the editors responsibilities. Although it's
not an especially time consuming position it does require a certain
reliability, which I am finding difficult to provide.
Since Michael's request we've had several people showing an interest. Perhaps
it is time to create a 'team' of editors - with the number of interested
parties we have, now could be a great time to try this new approach.
Therefore we are looking for any interested persons to bring forward their
ideas for contributes to the weekly newsletter. We know this new direction
will produce a really fantastic newsletter!
(The 'team' idea is not fixed and we could still stay with the one editor
formula.)
You can contact us by emailing editor@gutenbergnews.org OR hart@pglaf.org
The PG-News site will stay live and I will continue to update it with news
and stats from the newsletters, along with adding to the newsletter archives.
All the best

================================================================================
Another year is over for Project Gutenberg and as always it has been a busy one. Although we started out a little slow we had a great charge in the last few months, yet again our volunteers posted over four thousands new titles. We hit some impressive milestones along the way and also welcomed some new projects; PG Canada and DP Canada.
The combined PG projects have now produced a total of 26,161 titles, a fantastics effort by all involved and I don’t see any reason why we won’t reach the 30,000 mark before the end of 2008!
The usual newsletter statistics are presented as normal but I would like to outline a few interesting numbers here.
Every year I write my predictions, hopes and fears, but this year I think we can all agree that these predictions cross boundaries, concern advances, and declines, in both the technology and social world orders that are far beyond anything I previously predicted.
This year’s predictions include “personal libraries” on “personal computers” to rival the largest libraries in the world; USB 3.0– which will reduce overnight data copying and backups to ONE HOUR; and very inexpensive terabyte drives.
Prediction #1: The “Personal Computer” as “Personal Library”
Prediction #2: USB 3.0 Will Change The World of Copies/Backups
Prediction #3: USB 3.0 Terabyte Drives Will Do More Than. . . .
Prediction #4: Is “The Digital Divide” Half Empty Or Half Full?
Prediction #5: Rethinking “The Digital Divide”. . .More or Less
The World’s Largest Libraries, Will eLibraries Be Counted?

FEATURED NEWS
-------------
RIP ROBERT MARQUARDT, PG-SF BOOKSHELF CREATOR
Robert Marquardt, PG's wiki sysop, died this morning [2007/12/29]. His work
must remain unfinished and questions to him will remain unanswered. This was
his last will. This info was added by his brother Rolf Marquardt today
at PG's wiki.
Robert joined Project Gutenberg in December 2006 to create the Science Fiction
Bookshelf. He has completed the Project Gutenberg Science Fiction CD, which
was a tremendously huge success. He also made a promotional video for PG in
Esperanto. He was now working in other bookshelves.
Robert always worked very hard at PG, even while he was doing his hard cancer
treatments.
I'm sure that these are sad news to all volunteers. PGLAF should perhaps take
some symbolic condolences action.

END OF 2007 PG STATISTICS
Another year is over for Project Gutenberg and as always it has been a busy
one. Although we started out a little slow we had a great charge in the last
few months, yet again our volunteers posted over four thousands new titles.
We hit some impressive milestones along the way and also welcomed some new
projects; PG Canada and DP Canada.
The combined PG projects have now produced a total of 26,161 titles, a
fantastics effort by all involved and I don't see any reason why we won't
reach the 30,000 mark before the end of 2008!
The usual newsletter statistics are presented as normal but I would like to
outline a few interesting numbers here [I've also created a nice graph which
can be found on the gutenbergnews.org website].
The most number of books posted...
...in one day was 65 on the 26th December
...in one week was 151 in Week 18 (week ending 9th May)
...in one month was 477 in November
We averaged 338 books per month, 78 per week and 11.13 per day.
99 titles have been REposted to the new filing system, bringing us almost
to the 2,000 mark...not too bad but I am sure we can do much better for 2008!
Here is a small selection of project milestones;
TOTAL Project Gutenberg e-Texts
* 26,000 on 2007/12/24
* 25,000 on 2007/10/12
* 24,000 on 2007/07/10
* 23,000 on 2007/04/15
PG-US
* 24,000 on 2007/12/27
* 22,500 on 2007/09/09
PG-AU
* 1,500 on 2007/04/07
Thanks to all our volunteers and good luck in 2008.

along with most other text reading programs.
You can access them by visiting www.gutenbergnews.org and clicking on the
'Newsletter Archives' menu item.

PREPRINTS -- http://preprints.readingroo.ms

================================================================================
Robert Marquardt, PG’s wiki sysop, died this morning [2007/12/29]. His work must remain unfinished and questions to him will remain unanswered. This was his last will. This info was added by his brother Rolf Marquardt today at PG’s wiki.
Robert joined Project Gutenberg in December 2006 to create the Science Fiction Bookshelf. He has completed the Project Gutenberg Science Fiction CD, which was a tremendously huge success. He also made a promotional video for PG in Esperanto. He was now working in other bookshelves.
