LONDON (Reuters) – Britain’s slave trading past gets a human face on Friday as an ancestry-tracing Web site starts putting the personal histories of the victims online for the first time.
The Web site, Ancestry.co.uk, posted 100,000 names of Barbados slaves registered in 1834 in the colony. By December the site will contain the names of three million slaves from 700 registers in 23 British colonies, from South Africa to Sri Lanka between 1812-1834. Members of the site can search free for ancestors by entering their relatives’ first and last names and place of enslavement during that period.
“We’re dedicated to bringing quality historical record collections online and this is really important for anyone who is interested in black history,” said spokesman Simon Ziviani.

NEW MEDIA GUIDELINE: THOSE WITH THE GOLD. . .RULE!!!
[This past Sunday: 22-April 2007]
According to NPR it is the megacorp giant Time Warner who is the author of the
current bill in Congress for raising the relative amount small publications
pay to mail out their newspaper and magazines while reducing the relative
amount paid by media giants.
The expected result, more media supersaturation by an ever decreasing number
of media outlets such as radio superconglomerate Clear Channel.
These people have seen what fair competition did to a hugely profitable
monopoly by the Big Three Networks: CBS, NBC and ABC, competition, which, by
the way, had the effect of bringing out the Warner TV Network, but they really
don't want any changes other than in what media markets they don't already
rule. . .so, get out the superlobbyists and write a new law that tilts the
playing field more toward the media giants along with less for the little
guy. . .after all, we want to get America rolling with one voice. . .don't we?

To arrive at the Newsletter statistics a manual count was done on all the
'posted' listings found in the Newsletter Archives. For PG-EU the website
listing was used. All these statistics were then entered into a speadsheet.
DP-EU is currently concentrating on U.S. copyright clearable eBooks and
therefore many of these are posted to both the PG and PG-EU sites, non U.S.
clearable books posted to PG-EU only. Please note that only the non-clearable
('Unique') eBooks are counted toward the Totals and not the overall PG-EU total.

================================================================================
According to NPR it is the megacorp giant Time Warner who is the author of the current bill in Congress for raising the relative amount small publications pay to mail out their newspaper and magazines while reducing the relative amount paid by media giants.
The expected result, more media supersaturation by an ever decreasing number of media outlets such as radio superconglomerate Clear Channel.
These people have seen what fair competition did to a hugely profitable monopoly by the Big Three Networks:
CBS, NBC and ABC, competition, which, by the way, had the effect of bringing out the Warner TV Network, but they really don’t want any changes other than in what media markets they don’t already rule. . .so, get out the superlobbyists and write a new law that tilts the playing field more toward the media giants along with less for the little guy. . .after all, we want to get America rolling with one voice. . .don’t we?
The buzz on the London Book Fair floor included speculation on when Amazon will launch its own e-book reader as well as the increasing number of U.K. publishers that have signed on for Google’s Book Search.
Amazon has been previewing its e-reader to publishers both in the U.S. and U.K.—HarperCollins UK CEO Victoria Barnsley mentioned the reader at yesterday’s LBF seminar on green publishing—for months, although it has declined to comment on its existence to the press. According to publishers who have seen the player, the reader is a step up from the Sony Reader which was introduced last year. The screen quality is reportedly as sharp as Sony, but the Amazon device has better functionality, and, as should be expected from the e-tailer, a first rate e-commerce option. Amazon is expected to release the reader this spring, although the exact timing may depend on how fast it can develop a critical mass of titles. Two years ago, Amazon acquired Mobipocket—the company’s cross-platform e-book reader is designed to run on all PCs, handheld devices and mobile phones—and it is using that company to supply titles for the player.
In a dramatic seachange in book sales, the dead have risen to smite the hitherto all-conquering boy sorceror.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows has, for the past 16 weeks, looked to be the invincible champion of the bestseller lists, despite being more than three months away from publication. But the wizardy whippersnapper hadn’t reckoned on the return of an even more popular author: JRR Tolkien has come back from beyond the grave to seize the throne of Amazon’s book charts.

FEATURED NEWS
-------------
Congratulations to Project Gutenberg Australia for reaching ebook number #1500
Here are some words from both Colin Choat and Michael Hart.
MILESTONES AT PROJECT GUTENBERG OF AUSTRALIA
by Colin Choat
Recently we added ebook #1500 to our collection. One does not usually single
out a volunteer for mention but it seems appropriate on this occasion.
Significantly, the ebook was provided by Don Lainson of Canada and was his
250th contribution to Project Gutenberg of Australia. When one considers that
many of the titles making up our 1500 titles are short stories which appeared
in magazines and periodicals, the 'weight' of Don's contribution is even more
impressive.
Don became a volunteer in 2001, soon after Project Gutenberg of Australia was
started. His first book (our 14th) was 'Bush Studies' by Barbara Baynton.
He soon followed up with works by Edgar Rice Burroughs, D H Lawrence, George
Orwell and F Scott Fitfgerald and his book list is now an impressive one of
classics and bestsellers, interspersed with lighter works. Don's work with
Project Gutenberg of Australia followed a period during which he submitted
books to Project Gutenberg in the United States.
One does not boast a collection of 1500 ebooks without the help of MANY
volunteers and there have been many who have submitted many books. One does not
usually single out one name for recognition, for fear of overlooking others.
I could not, however, let the occasion pass without acknowledgment of Don's
contribution to the success of Project Gutenberg of Australia.
Our ebook #1500 is 'A Scot's Quair' by Lewis Grassic Gibbon, a landmark work
in Scottish literature, set against the background of the First World War and
the industrial unrest and poverty of the nineteen thirties. 'A Scot's Quair'
can be accessed from http://gutenberg.net.au/plusfifty-a-m.html#gibbon.
CONGRATULATIONS TO PG OF AUSTRALIA ON THEIR 1500TH EBOOK.
Many thanks and congratulations to Project Gutenberg of Australia on their
1500th eBook!!! Since it took me and many volunteers the years from
1971 to 1998 to get from 1 to 1500, I can certainly do some serious
appreciating of the effort and stamina required, and I also know a little
of the volunteerism of Australia, though not nearly enough, I am sure.
My most heartfelt congratulations!!!

================================================================================
Though I don’t read Finnish, Portuguese or Icelandic, it is of some comfort to know that hundreds of books in these languages are now stored on my computer. They are in good company. Just as I am not likely ever to read “Hattu Yksinaytoksinen Huvinaytelma” by Alfhild Agrell, so, too, will I probably never work my way through a report about the building of the Pennsylvania Railroad’s tunnel under the East River in New York in the early 1900s, or seek out “A Lady’s Visit to the Gold Diggings of Australia in 1852-53,” by Mrs. Charles (Ellen) Clacy. But there they are, a few kilobytes away from one another inside an extremely large folder of fellow files.
If these particular books end up neglected or perhaps, one day, even deleted, there are 11,846 others I have stored in digital form, all taken from three text-DVDs created by Richard Seltzer, who has turned such repackaging into a business. Many I’ve already been lured into sampling if not reading.
Congratulations to Project Gutenberg Australia for reaching eBook number #1500. Here are some words from both Colin Choat and Michael Hart.
Milestones at Project Gutenberg of Australia
Recently we added ebook #1500 to our collection. One does not usually single out a volunteer for mention but it seems appropriate on this occasion. Significantly, the ebook was provided by Don Lainson of Canada and was his 250th contribution to Project Gutenberg of Australia. When one considers that many of the titles making up our 1500 titles are short stories which appeared in magazines and periodicals, the ‘weight’ of Don’s contribution is even more impressive.

FEATURED NEWS
-------------
PROJECT GUTENBERG TV PERSONALITY NEEDED
A four part series on the history of reading currently in production is
looking for a Project Gutenberg volunteer to participate.
Ideally, this individual has had a long involvement with Project Gutenberg,
has uploaded vast numbers of books, speaks passionately about the role of
books in society and the need for universal access to texts
[ergo Project Gutenberg] and has some compelling personal reason for their
participation.
If at all interested, please contact Judy at jruzylo@sympatico.ca.
We would be looking to shoot in mid to late summer and would be happy to
travel to where you are.
The films are being produced in Toronto with a French co-producer. The roster
of stories is international. It is presently slated to air in the fall 2008
in Canada (in English and French), Australia, France, Netherlands and on a
couple specialty satellite channels.
We have had some discussions with PBS as the American broadcaster but have no
firm commitment to date.
