World's Oldest Newspaper Dumps Print Version

The Associated Press reports that Sweden’s Post-och Inrikes Tidningar — the world’s oldest newspaper — has now dumped its print edition and gone digital only.

The newspaper, founded in 1645 by Sweden’s Queen Kristina, became a Web-only publication on Jan. 1. It’s a fate, many ink-stained writers and readers fear, that may await many of the world’s most venerable journals.

“We think it’s a cultural disaster,” said Hans Holm, who served as the chief editor of Post-och Inrikes Tidningar for 20 years. “It is sad when you have worked with it for so long and it has been around for so long.”

The Medieval Helpdesk: A Youtube Video

A short movie on YouTube that is getting millions of hits, and is a total riot!

Just a short note on how the video about the Medieval “Book” Helpdesk got here.

As with so many people, I had played with YouTube once a month or so to do a little searching for certain things and look over the hot lists, but the major YouTube experience had pretty much eluded me, that is, until my Mom, who is turning 95 shortly, sent me The Medieval Helpdesk. I loved it much and forwarded it to a few dozen friends, who then forwarded it on and on– and it just kept going. The result, I am now an official YouTube member– but all the names I tried based on my own name were taken, so…I am now Johannes Gutenberg on YouTube, and hope to be uploading in a few months. ;-)

The People Who Owned the Bible – A Very funny Copyright Story

It was time for another Mickey Mouse Copyright Extension to keep Disney’s star property out of the public domain. Somebody’s nephew had a bright idea. Instead of telling Congress to add the standard twenty years to the length of copyright, why not go for the big time? Extend copyright by 500 years.

Somebody’s niece added a smarter reason: A 500 year extension would let Disney track down Shakespeare’s heirs and buy all rights to the Bard. No matter how much the heirs wanted, the deal would pay for itself in no time. Every school that ever wanted to perform or study Shakespeare would have to send a check to Disney. Every newspaper or magazine or radio show that wanted to quote the Bard would have to send one, too. So Disney asked, and Congress gave, and the World Intellectual Property Organization followed Congress’s example. Disney paid off Shakespeare’s heirs, then used the Shakespeare profits to buy all rights from the heirs of Dumas, Dickens, Twain, Mary Shelley, Jane Austen, Bram Stoker and more. Once most of the films in every other studio’s library were subject to Disney’s copyright, they went bankrupt or became divisions of Disney.

And everyone was content, except for the storytellers who had to buy a Disney license or prove that their work owed nothing to the last 500 years of literature.

Then Jimmy Joe Jenkins’s DNA proved he was the primary descendent of the translators of the King James Version of the Bible. At first, Jimmy was satisfied with ten percent of the price of every KJV sold and 10 percent of every collection plate passed by any church that used the KJV. But when some churches switched to newer translations, Jimmy sicced his lawyers on all translations based on the KJV. That got him a cut of every Bible and every Christian service in English. Some translators claimed their work was based on older versions and should therefore be exempt, but none of them could afford to fight Jimmy in court.** **

The Loss and Rediscovery of the Great Epic of Gilgamesh

The stylized images of ancient Assyrian kings, with their braided beards and Art Deco muscles, riding out in chariots to hunt lions or men, are now familiar, but until the 19th century nothing was known of them. All evidence had been buried for more than two millenniums under the soil of what is today Iraq. How we came to uncover that world, and how that world reached out toward our own, is part of the story David Damrosch tells in “The Buried Book: The Loss and Rediscovery of the Great Epic of Gilgamesh.”

Borders retreats from Britain to concentrate on US book chain

Borders, the US book chain, said yesterday it planned to withdraw from Britain, underlining the dire state of book retailing on the high street.

The group said it had hired the investment bank Merrill Lynch to explore alternatives for its 71 stores in the UK. It also plans to get rid of its businesses in Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. The announcement follows HMV’s decision last week to close 30 of its Waterstone’s book chain.

Real readers want bookshops with personality and choice

When a bookshop works, there is really nothing quite like it – and Foyles works. As an independent, it cannot compete with the big chains on advertising or discounts. So it has come up with other, more subtle strategies to bring in customers. Its staff, for instance, are passionate and knowledgeable (I know for a fact – as do lots of Soho art directors – that a certain member of its art department can find you any image from any period in art history in a matter of minutes).

THE OPENLEARN PROJECT

The openlearn project makes educational resources, taken from Open University
courses, freely available to anyone, anywhere in the world with access to the
internet. Published under a Creative Commons copyright license, users are
free to download, remix and share the material under the same license.

The Open University itself was founded in the late 1960’s with a mission to
make higher education available to those who had previously been excluded.
Similar to Project Gutenberg’s aim to "break down the bars of ignorance and
illiteracy" openlearn seeks to make its educational material globally
available to those wish to use it.

Openlearn units cover all manner of subjects from Arts & History, to Study
Skills, to IT and Computing. A full list of subject areas is available at
http://openlearn.open.ac.uk.

Areas of interest to those involved in the creation of ebooks might include
Design, Accessibility in Interaction Design, Presenting Information and
ICTs: Device to Device Communication. Units that might be effectively turned
into ebooks include Hume, Living with the Internet: Keeping It safe,
Evolution Through Natural Selection, Global Warming and Learning How to Learn
Anyone wishing to reuse openlearn material should consult the openlearn FAQs
on Intellectual Property or contact Stuart Brown at s.a.brown@open.ac.uk.

FIRST CEBUANO EBOOK ON PROJECT GUTENBERG

Project Gutenberg of the Philippines (http://www.gutenberg.ph) is happy to
announce the release of the first Cebuano Ebook, Larawan: Mga Sugilanon ug
Dinalídalí, a collection of short stories by Vicente Rama (1887-1956).
Originally, these stories where published in Cebu in 1921.

The stories give a humorous glimpse back into the life in Cebu in the early
twenties of the last century, and, besides that provide a nice reader for
students of the Cebuano language.

The book can be downloaded from http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/20820.
Due to their age, the copyright on these stories has expired, which means that
Project Gutenberg can make them available for free, and with hardly any
restrictions on their use and re-use.

This addition also marks the addition of a third Philippine language to
Project Gutenberg (next to Tagalog and Iloko) and the 51st language to
Project Gutenberg.

POLL: RESULTS

Should PG 'officially' adopt a XML, TEI or similar Master File?

NO, we should stick with Plain-Vanilla ASCII files.
  29 (49.2%)
YES, this is a must!
  23 (39%)
I haven't a clue what you're talking about.
   4 (6.8%)
It's really not that important.
   3 (5.1%)

Except for the last few days it's been a close call between those in favour
and those against, with each taking it in turn for the top spot. With a total
of only 59 votes it's difficult to take a real hard stance on the subject but
there is certainly a good percentage of people in favour of this approach.

As for an official statement - Michael Hart has been noted as saying that he
doesn't want to 'enforce' any one format but is happy for any one to
contribute their own formats to the PG collection.

So, if you are one of those in favour then the best thing you can do now is
start converting over those PG texts.

Marking up texts in the TEI format not only makes it easier to convert to
other formats (PDF, HTML, etc) but can also produce Plain-Vanilla texts.
Over the coming weeks I am hoping to present some information on the PG-TEI
implementation, tools to help in creating the PG-TEI mark-up and web links.

To arrive at the Newsletter statistics a manual count was done on all the
'posted' listings found in the Newsletter Archives. For PG-EU the website
listing was used. All these statistics were then entered into a speadsheet.

DP-EU is currently concentrating on U.S. copyright clearable eBooks and
therefore many of these are posted to both the PG and PG-EU sites, non U.S.
clearable books posted to PG-EU only. Please note that only the non-clearable
('Unique') eBooks are counted toward the Grand Total and not the overall PG-EU
total.

The Openlearn Project

The openlearn project makes educational resources, taken from Open University courses, freely available to anyone, anywhere in the world with access to the internet. Published under a Creative Commons copyright license, users are free to download, remix and share the material under the same license.

Similar to Project Gutenberg’s aim to "break down the bars of ignorance and illiteracy" openlearn seeks to make its educational material globally available to those wish to use it.
