There has always been an appreciation of Boyd E (1980) Origins of the Study of Human Growth, Child Study Clinic, University of Oregon Health Science Center: most recently cited in a plenary session of the 15th European Anthropology association Congress in Budapest.
This prompted enthusiastic response by colleagues who realize they must have access to the entire book, not just a few photocopied sections or secondary reporting. I tried, in vain to locate copies for several of them. Google listed some but, had to cancel my order for two because they were now unavailable. I am continuing to scour the book sellers. With some of our colleagues, even $65 the original cost is prohibitive. As the originator of the Gutenberg project, you have a more generic appreciation for access to information by the NOW generation than I have with our narrower focus on Human Biology and the Health Professions.
UCLA has sent letters notifying 800,000 faculty, staff, students, and applicants that a database containing their personal information was accessed by a hacker for more than a year. Officials at the university said the database was breached in October 2005 but that the problem was not discovered until late November of this year when university staff observed that a hacker was searching the database for names and Social Security numbers. Jim Davis, CIO at UCLA, said that perhaps 5 percent of the records were accessed and that so far there have been no reports of the information being misused. He also noted that the compromised database was a central component of the university's computer systems and was protected by stringent security. The attackers used highly sophisticated methods, Davis said, both to access the system and to cover their tracks to prevent detection.San Jose Mercury News, 12 December 2006 http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/news/16220549.htm
Researchers in South Africa now have access to a new supercomputer at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) offices in Pretoria. Though the computer's peak output of one teraflop pales in comparison to systems in other parts of the world, it nonetheless provides a new level of computational power to scientists studying several medical conditions that are epidemic in South Africa, including AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis. The system, which was donated to the CSIR by Intel, is free of charge for researchers, who will use it to process vast amounts of data related to the structure of diseases, how they are transmitted, and the effectiveness of vaccines. Winston Hide, director of the South African National Bioinformatics Institute at the University of the Western Cape, explained the benefits of the new system by saying, "It's like using the brightest possible search light in a cave as opposed to a torch." -.- HOW TO GET EBOOKS FROM PROJECT GUTENBERG -.-
The easiest way to obtain our eBooks is at our search page at
http://gutenberg.org/find
which allows searching by title, author or eBook number; there is also
an Advanced Search page which allows for additional search criteria
(note that our newer postings may not yet be indexed for all additional
criteria). And please note: you can now obtain a listing by language
at the above link.
Mirrors (copies) of the complete collection are available around the
world, and you can select one nearer to your location from the link on
the search results page. To see a listing of mirror sites, and locate
the one nearest to you, visit:
http://gutenberg.org/MIRRORS.ALL
If you prefer to download eBooks via other methods than from the search
page, and need additional information, please refer to the file
GUTINDEX.ALL, available for viewing or downloading at:
http://www.gutenberg.org/GUTINDEX.ALL
That file contains descriptions and explanations about the filenaming
process, directory structure, file formats, and more.
And to directly access the file directories:
http://gutenberg.org/dirs/
Please note that the Project Gutenberg Production Team continues the
process of manually re-posting those eBooks originally posted prior to
Nov 2003 to the new filenaming and directory system (based on the eBook
number). This process includes some file maintenance (repairing,
correcting and re-formatting to current PG standards where practicable).
These re-postings are noted in the "corrections" listings below. More
information can be found in the file GUTINDEX.ALL mentioned above.

NOTES:
Project Gutenberg Australia total does NOT include PGAu eBooks posted at the
U.S. site: www.gutenberg.org
Project Gutenberg Europe numbers may be currently counted twice
(in PGUS and PGEu). I am hoping to get this confirmed or denied soon.
We have several counting methods, and they often differ by several books
that we have to hunt down by hand to reconcile. There is also some
duplication between these various collections. Volunteers will need to take
these duplications into account.
The totals for the four collections are eBooks that originated as created,
edited, proofread, formatted, etc., by Project Gutenberg and its 50,000
volunteers, while the Project Gutenberg Consortia Center with 100,000+ books
contains entire eBook collections from 125+ eLibraries. Therefore the
production statistics given here are for some 20,000+ eBooks created by the
various teams of Project Gutenberg volunteers, for which we share the
responsibility of maintaining. The Consortia Center eBooks were and are the
responsibility of the donating eLibraries, and we would be happy to forward
any suggestions for correction to those eLibraries, but those eBooks must be
edited by the donating parties, as per their requests.
=-=-=-=-=-=-==-=-=-==-=-=-=[ OTHER STATISTICS ]=-=-=-=-=-==-=-=-==-=-=-=-=
SNAIL MAIL (DVD & CD)
Over 15 million eBooks have been sent out via snail mail!!!
DP - DISTRIBUTED PROOFREADERS
9,537 [+39] at Distributed Proofreaders
The Distributed Proofreaders started production in October 2000 and
currently has over 36,000 volunteers.
For more complete DP statistics, visit:
http://www.pgdp.net/c/stats/stats_central.php
NOTE: PGDP mostly included in US eBooks.
NOTE: PGEU has its own Distributed Proofreaders whose total closely matches
their grand total.
DAILY PREPRINTS
379 [+ 1] at Daily PrePrints
Stats available at: http://preprints.readingroo.ms
Please note that sometimes it takes a few weeks for entire collections to fully
appear in the PrePrints Section, thus the count sometimes jumps by a large
number when the files are eventually completed and added in. Also note that the
PrePrint files are just that, PrePrints, and thus may move later to other
locations, including the main collection or The Project Gutenberg Consortia
Center, etc. For example, on June 14, 200 WAP compatible cell phone eBooks
appeared, and will likely be moved to other collection points later.
The entire process of working out the details just to send them to the
PrePrints Section took well over a month.
Even with the speeded up process of the PrePrints Section, it still takes a
certain amount of time to collect and put such a large collection online in a
proper manner.
PGCC - PROJECT GUTENBERG CONSORTIA CENTER REPORT
137,142 eBooks at PGCC.
The PGCC collection at http://www.gutenberg.cc has doubled in size from the
listings below, but we don't have exactly matching collection sizes yet for a
new breakdown.
There are ~185,000 separate downloadable files, and presuming 45% are
redundant or are required at the level of more than one file per book:
The number of individual eBooks now is about 100,000.
Thus the grand total of eBooks at Project Gutenberg is 21,000+ created by
Project Gutenberg volunteers, and 100,000 donated from over 125 other
eLibraries, to create a downloadable library of 100,000+ eBooks plus 80,000
donated from over 100 other eLibraries, to create a downloadable library of
100,000+ eBooks.

EDUCAUSE has released results from its annual Core Data Service survey, which questions higher education information technology leaders about various aspects of IT on campus. According to the results, the percentage of colleges and universities that choose to contract any of several IT functions to outside vendors rose for the second straight year, to 57 percent, up from 53 percent last year. Other notable changes included a rise in the percentage of institutions that have deployed wireless connectivity on campus, particularly in libraries, and a rise in the percentage of campuses that have undertaken an assessment of computer security. Greater proportions of colleges said they track bandwidth usage this year than last year, and campuses also saw a rise in the number that installed ERP systems. The full text of the "EDUCAUSE Core Data Service Fiscal Year 2005 Summary Report" is available at the EDUCAUSE Web site (http://www.educause.edu/apps/coredata/reports/2005/). Results of the 2006 Teen Trend study indicate that U.S. teenagers spend more than 72 hours per week using electronic media, which includes the Internet, television, cell phones, video games, and music. The study, which is in its third year, was conducted by the Harrison Group and sponsored by VNU Business Media. Jim Taylor, vice chairman of the Harrison Group, said that the prevalence of these forms of media causes teens to see themselves as stars of their own reality television shows. "Teen life," he said, "has become a theatrical, self-directed media production." Among specific findings of the study: 68 percent of teens have profiles on social networking sites, about 75 percent spend two to three hours a day listening to or downloading online music, and about half of the teens who download music believe that it is legal.CNET, 7 December 2006 http://news.com.com/2100-1041_3-6141920.html

Live Search - http://search.live.com/
"Microsoft is releasing its Live Search Books, a rival to Google's
Book Search, in test, or beta, version in the US. The digital archive
will include books from the collections of the British Library, the
University of California and the University of Toronto. Books from
three other institutions will be added in January 2007. All the books
currently included in the project will be non-copyrighted but later it
will also add copyrighted work that publishers have given permission
to include in the project."
Microsoft is set to release a test version of its competitor to Google's controversial book-scanning project. Unlike Google's program, Microsoft's Live Search Books, which goes online December 7, is only scanning out-of-copyright books or those whose copyright owners have given explicit permission. By contrast, Google is scanning in-copyright books, though only books out of copyright will be available on its site. One of the features of the Live Search Books took will allow users to access and search the full texts of books included in the program. When Microsoft's site goes live, it will include texts from the British Library, the University of California, and the University of Toronto. Books from three other institutions will go online in early 2007.BBC, 6 December 2006 http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/6213260.stm
The U.S. government has approved a deal under which VeriSign, which has operated the .com domain since 1999, will retain control of the domain until 2012. The proposal, drafted by VeriSign and the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), was presented to the U.S. Department of Commerce in March of this year. Since that time, the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), an agency of the Department of Commerce, has been reviewing the proposal and comments on it. Specifically, many international organizations complained that control of the world's most popular Internet domain should not lie with a U.S. company. Other criticisms included the length of the contract, which some said was too long. In the end, the agencies involved approved the contract, which includes limits on price increases.
