Novell Withdraws From Hula Open Source Project

Novell stopped participating in the Hula open source e-mail and calendaring software project it began in February 2005. According to Novell representative Peter Teichman, business customers already had e-mail and calendaring services in place. The company is thus shifting its resources to other projects, asking members of the Hula community to take over its previous leadership role and to continue working on the code.ZDNet, 29 November 2006

Quick Growth Predicted For Global Mobile Entertainment

Juniper Research estimates that the global mobile entertainment market is currently worth $17 billion and will grow to $47 billion by 2009 and $77 billion by 2011. The company predicts European and Asia Pacific countries will come to dominate the global market for mobile entertainment. Today, mobile music is the largest sector, followed by "infotainment," which includes sport, leisure, and information products. Juniper expects revenues from mobile games and mobile TV will surpass the music sector by 2011, as will mobile gambling.Silicon Republic, 29 November 2006

Publishers Criticize Professors For Copyright Violations

The Association of American Publishers (AAP) is calling on colleges and universities to take steps to address what they see as rampant copyright abuse by faculty. According to the AAP, faculty who post protected content online for use in their courses cost the publishing industry at least $20 million each year in lost revenues. Before the advent of online reserves, faculty would often place hard-copy materials in the library for students to view. That practice has been largely replaced by making digital copies of course materials available online. The publishing industry objects, saying faculty who do this go beyond the scope of fair use. Allan Adler, vice president for legal and governmental affairs with AAP, said, “We can’t compete with free.” The organization pointed to a recent agreement with Cornell University in which the institution works to educate faculty on appropriate uses of copyrighted material and on best practices to avoid infringing uses. The AAP hopes that other institutions will implement programs similar to the one Cornell has adopted.Seattle Post-Intelligencer, 20 November 2006 http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/business/292898_copyright20.html

PG Weekly Newsletter (2006-11-29)

pgweekly_2006_11_29.txt
The Project Gutenberg Weekly Newsletter For Wednesday, November 29, 2006
****eBooks Readable By Both Humans And Computers Since July 4, 1971****

Introduction
------------
Dear Subscribers,

Some weeks back I emailed Michael Hart with a proposal for a new and different
approach to the weekly PG newsletter. I am happy to say that Michael and
Greg [Newby] have agreed for me to try out this new approach.

Most, if not all the information previously included will still be available,
although it will now be in a different format.

I have rewritten the newsletter to focus more on the core statistical
information (totals, %, averages, etc) from the various PG areas, including
the Australian, European and PGCC figures. The Updates/Corrections/New eBook
listings will also be included.

For all the other information - wanted adverts, donation information and
news - I have created the PG-News website, https://www.gutenbergnews.org

If you have any questions or thoughts on these changes please email:
editor_AT_gutenbergnews.org

Kind Regards,
Michael Cook

NOTES:

Project Gutenberg Australia total does NOT include PGAu eBooks posted at the
U.S. site: www.gutenberg.org

We have several counting methods, and they often differ by several books
that we have to hunt down by hand to reconcile. There is also some
duplication between these various collections. Volunteers will need to take
these duplications into account.

The totals for the four collections are eBooks that originated as created,
edited, proofread, formatted, etc., by Project Gutenberg and its 50,000
volunteers, while the Project Gutenberg Consortia Center with 100,000+ books
contains entire eBook collections from 125+ eLibraries so the production
statistics given here are for some 20,000+ eBooks created by the various
teams of Project Gutenberg volunteers, for which we share the responsibility
of maintaining. The Consortia Center eBooks were and are the responsibility
of the donating eLibraries, and we would be happy to forward any suggestions
for correction to those eLibraries, but those eBooks must be edited by the
donating parties, as per their requests.

SNAIL MAIL (DVD & CD)
Over 15 million eBooks have been sent out via snail mail!!!

DISTRIBUTED PROOFREADERS:
9,881 [+46] at Distributed Proofreaders

The Distributed Proofreaders started production in October 2000 and
currently has over 36,000 volunteers.

For more complete DP statistics, visit:

NOTE: PGDP mostly included in US eBooks
NOTE: PGEU has its own Distributed Proofreaders whose total closely matches
      their grand total.

PGCC - PROJECT GUTENBERG CONSORTIA CENTER REPORT
137,142 eBooks at PGCC

The PGCC collection at http://www.gutenberg.cc has doubled in size from the
listings below, but we don't have exactly matching collection sizes yet for a
new breakdown.

There are ~185,000 separate downloadable files, and presuming 45% are
redundant or are required at the level of more than one file per book:

The number of individual eBooks now is about 100,000.

Thus the grand total of eBooks at Project Gutenberg is 21,000+ created by
Project Gutenberg volunteers, and 100,000 donated from over 125 other
eLibraries, to create a downloadable library of 100,000+ eBooks plus 80,000
donated from over 100 other eLibraries, to create a downloadable library of
100,000+ eBooks.

DAILY PREPRINTS
378 [+ 0] at Daily PrePrints

Stats available at: http://preprints.readingroo.ms

Please note that sometimes it takes a few weeks for entire collections to fully
appear in the PrePrints Section, thus the count sometimes jumps by a large
number when the files are eventually completed and added in. Also note that the
PrePrint files are just that, PrePrints, and thus may move later to other
locations, including the main collection or The Project Gutenberg Consortia
Center, etc. For example, on June 14, 200 WAP compatible cell phone eBooks
appeared, and will likely be moved to other collection points later.

The entire process of working out the details just to send them to the PrePrints
Section took well over a month.

Even with the speeded up process of the PrePrints Section, it still takes a
certain amount of time to collect and put such a large collection online in a
proper manner.

THE ONLINE BOOKS PAGE
25,000 eBooks are listed via The Online Books Page

NOTE: 6,300 of these are from PG.

INTERNET PUBLIC LIBRARY
22,284 entries at IPL

The Internet Public Library (IPL) had a similar listing to The Online Books Page
which is now in limbo. If anyone knows what is happening with the IPL, please
let us know. Inquiries, made months ago, and again recently, have not turned up
any current information.

You can try a new IPL service at:
http://www.ipl.org/div/subject/browse/hum60.60.00/

It would appear that The Internet Public Library ended its first incarnation
with about 22,284 entries, which has now been surpassed by the Online Books
Page.

We are still looking for more Internet Public Library info.

Dodging The Censors

Researchers at the Citizen Lab at the University of Toronto have developed software that they hope will allow Internet users in nations that practice censorship to have full access to the Web. Available as of December 1, the software, called psiphon, operates using social networking principles. Users in countries without censorship will download the application, which allows their computers to function as proxies. Users in countries with government censors can then access the Internet through the psiphon software, sidestepping Internet filters.
The software merely indicates that a user is connected to another machine, without divulging details about that machine or what Web pages are visited. Ronald Deibert, director of the Citizen Lab, said psiphon is an effort to counterbalance what he called the militarization of Internet censorship, restoring free access to online resources.
Officials from the Citizen Lab cautioned, however, that use of psiphon could constitute a criminal offense in some countries and advised potential users to understand the risks.

PG Other Newsletter: Newsletter Troubles Today (2006-11-22)

From hart at pglaf.org Wed Nov 22 08:44:40 2006
From: hart at pglaf.org (Michael Hart)

Subject: [gweekly] PG Newsletter Troubles Today!! New Editors Welcome Now!!
Message-ID: <Pine.LNX.4.60.0611220823400.18336@pglaf.org>

My email connection is SO bad right now that I can't edit
much of anything online, so I may not get ALL statistics,
reviews, etc. up to date by the deadline, and may have to
send out a further revised copy later on. Sorry, but the
lag is minutes to see what I have typed, so I am doing it
all locally, then cutting and pasting the revised parts--
then waiting literally minutes to see what happened.

Don't be surprised if it takes a day or two for this odds
and ends approach to get through to you, as I have made a
piligrimage to another site to get a better connection to
do this, and the results are staggeringly bad. I had too
many minutes of retrying just to get this connection from
the new spot to count, and so I know it's not just a very
bad connection from my house. In fact, looking at counts
of characters coming in and out here I don't ever think I
will be able to send anything but the most rudmentary for
the period until this clears up. BTW, testing from Newby
says everything is working well from his end but I assure
you it is not multiple ends here.

My apologies, this will be the first time I have not sent
an entire Project Gutenberg Newsletter when scheduled to.

This might be a GREAT time for our new Newsletter editor!

At the moment it appears we already have over one hundred
new eBooks this week, which will put us over 22,000!!!

However, I will not be able to integrate this total in an
electronic format to send you, since I can't up/down/load
the entire Newsletter under these conditions, or rewrite,
as I usually do, so this may be it for right now. I will
try again tomorrow, of course, but it's been getting bad,
moreso each day, so don't hold your breath.

Again my apologies, even my normal backdoor approach will
not help if the trouble is further up the line, which has
been what it appears to be as this new site location will
not give me any better service.

-.- HOW TO GET EBOOKS FROM PROJECT GUTENBERG -.-

The easiest way to obtain our eBooks is at our search page at

   http://gutenberg.org/find

which allows searching by title, author or eBook number; there is also
an Advanced Search page which allows for additional search criteria
(note that our newer postings may not yet be indexed for all additional
criteria). And please note: you can now obtain a listing by language
at the above link.

Mirrors (copies) of the complete collection are available around the
world, and you can select one nearer to your location from the link on
the search results page. To see a listing of mirror sites, and locate
the one nearest to you, visit:

   http://gutenberg.org/MIRRORS.ALL

If you prefer to download eBooks via other methods than from the search
page, and need additional information, please refer to the file
GUTINDEX.ALL, available for viewing or downloading at:

   http://www.gutenberg.org/GUTINDEX.ALL

That file contains descriptions and explanations about the filenaming
process, directory structure, file formats, and more.

And to directly access the file directories:

   http://gutenberg.org/dirs/

Please note that the Project Gutenberg Production Team continues the
process of manually re-posting those eBooks originally posted prior to
Nov 2003 to the new filenaming and directory system (based on the eBook
number). This process includes some file maintenance (repairing,
correcting and re-formatting to current PG standards where practicable).
These re-postings are noted in the "corrections" listings below. More
information can be found in the file GUTINDEX.ALL mentioned above.

(David Price, For those wishing to know: James Crabb (1774-1851) became
passionately interested in the welfare of the English Gypsies when in
March 1827 he witnessed a distressed Gypsy family whose father was about
to be executed. From this and his religious motives he started to work
for the bettering of the conditions of the Gypsies. His main work was
via the Southampton Committee and this book, written in 1831, gives an
account of the early days of this work. A fair amount of background
information is also given about the Gypsies.)

=-=-=-=-=-=-==-=-=-==-=-=-=[ OTHER STATISTICS ]=-=-=-=-=-==-=-=-==-=-=-=-=

SNAIL MAIL (DVD & CD)

currently has over 36,000 volunteers.

For more complete DP statistics, visit:
http://www.pgdp.net/c/stats/stats_central.php

PGCC's current eBook and eDocument Collections listings of 18 collections with
this week's listing as:
