In the last few days, John Mark Ockerbloom announced that he is retiring the 10 year old Book People mailing list. I only caught the tail end of this run but the discussions on their were very good indeed. It seems that anyone who took part also thought the same. Here follows the post (in full) John made announcing the decision.
I’d like to let listmembers know that on Friday, November 30, I will cease forwarding submissions for the Book People mailing list, and the list will end its run of over 10 years.
One of the easiest ways to start creating MP3 files of eBooks is to visit download TextAloud from NextUp. The product costs $29.95 but they do have a trial offer for you to try out.
Then you will need a “voice”. Because I am British I use “Graham” from Acapela. Voices from this manufacturer cost $35. There are lots more voices that you can hear samples of at that website. Male, female, US, Australian, Indian, just take your personal choice. RealSpeak voices cost $45. AT&T Natural Voices generally cost $35. A pair of NeoSpeech voices cost $35. The larger the file-size of a “voice” the better it should be, because it will have the pronunciation of more words than a smaller sized voice, and it should also have rules for deciding between the pronunciation of the roughly 120 words in the English language that have two or more different pronunciations. If there is a choice between 8 kHz (kilohertz) and 16 kHz voices take the 16 kHz, because this number indicates the sampling rate per second. Your computer comes complete with some voices that will work with TextAloud, but they are not as good as, say, the Acapela voices. When you are listening to a good, modern, voice, it is hard to believe it is not a real person that is speaking. Any voice you buy should be described as SAPI5, as that is the most modern standard.

FEATURED NEWS

MARKETINTELL NOW: EBOOKS POLL
Project Gutenberg recently received an email from MarketIntellNow,
(http://www.marketintellnow.com) a Maryland-based, six-year old market
research firm that focuses on nascent niches. They do a lot of polling using
a methodology called "ANWO", they then blog about the results at a high
level (for free) while selling the resulting report in their eStore.
Of late they have started examining the world of eBooks and just recently
polled 5,000 Netizens on the subject.
I emailed them back to see if they could pass along some insights on what the
poll told, here is their response;
eBooks has to date been all ranch, no cattle. That's about to change;
here's why:
Amazon and others are about to deliver a dizzying array of e-titles of all
types. Sure, there's still the format issue (Sony Reader unwisely landlocks
users with their BBeB format) but this will wash out fast, because the revenue
opportunity is vast. Never underestimate America's slavish love of speed and
convenience; our survey of 5,000 Netizens shows that a big reason eBooks is
at the inflection point is because readers want what they want
instantaneously.

...and talking of Polls...
Some time back I started a poll to see how many e-texts from the PG archives
our visitors have read. As there was almost no response for this I decided to
leave the poll running.
Now though, I think it is time to wrap this one up. So, if you have not
already voted then visit www.gutenbergnews.org and place your vote now!
Here are the current results;
How many e-texts have you read from the PG archives?
* 26% -- 200+
* 21% -- 1-10
* 18% -- 10-20
* 13% -- 50-100
* 11% -- 20-50
* 11% -- 100-200
Total Voters: 38
This poll will close in two weeks and the results will be shown in the
21-November-2007 Newsletter.

NOTES:
To arrive at the Newsletter statistics a manual count was done on all the
'posted' listings found in the Newsletter Archives. For PG-EU the website
listing was used. All these statistics were then entered into a spreadsheet.
DP-EU is currently concentrating on U.S. copyright clearable eBooks and
therefore many of these are posted to both the PG and PG-EU sites, non U.S.
clearable books posted to PG-EU only. Please note that only the non-clearable
('Unique') eBooks are counted toward the Totals and not the overall PG-EU total.
DP-CA - Like the European project this has many books posted to both the PG and
PG-CA sites, non U.S. clearable books posted to PG-CA only. Please note that
only the non-clearable ('Unique') eBooks are counted toward the Totals and
not the overall PG-CA total.

================================================================================
So it is finally here, TEI v1.0 of P5. Around six months ago I did some research into TEI and noted there was some big improvements over P4. If you need a mature XML based markup (perhaps for use as a Master File Format) I would certainly recommend having look at TEI P5.
Here is the official notification of the release;
After more than 6 years of, at times quite intensive, development, it is with great pleasure that I announce the release of version 1.0 of P5, the latest and greatest version of the Guidelines of the Text Encoding Initiative, which officially happened Nov. 2 at the TEI Members Meeting in Maryland. You will find the new version online at www.tei-c.org; a PDF and even printed books are expected to appear in due time.
